Antioxidant – TURMERIC – An Antioxidant for the Brain
Spice Up Your Immune System
As a spice, Turmeric adds some zest to Indian curry – but as an herbal supplement, Turmeric lends its zing to help the immune system. Turmeric contains beneficial flavonoids – plant-based antioxidants that help fight cell-damaging free radicals. Plus, Turmeric may support brain health. Many older citizens of India have been reported to be able to maintain healthy brain functioning as they age. The high intake of Turmeric in India is believed to contribute to brain health and functioning.
A chemical analysis of Turmeric classified the herb as having a high flavonoids content (>500 mg/100 g). These results indicate that Turmeric possesses antioxidant properties through its flavonoids content, which can help fight cell-damaging free radicals, In a clinical trial, 40 males who had recently been subjected to heavy physical stress were administered either 400 mg of Curcumin, a natural component of Turmeric, 100 mg phenylbutazone or a placebo three times daily for five days. Those participant receiving Curcumin had a healthy immune response and improved comfort when compared to placebo.
